Metamorphose - A Transfigure Films Production
Vancouver filmmaker discusses body horror, creature design, practical effects and the biological inspiration behind his sci-fi horror project.
Transfigure Films is pleased to share a featured interview with director and filmmaker Dallas Harvey in MovieMaker Magazine, exploring his work in genre filmmaking and the development of the sci-fi body-horror project Metamorphose.
The article, “Dallas Harvey Film ‘Metamorphose’ Is Not for Trypophobes,” looks at Harvey’s unconventional path from digital animation and special effects into practical creature fabrication and, ultimately, directing his own films.
Drawing on more than a decade of experience creating practical and digital effects, Harvey approaches filmmaking from an effects-first perspective—developing creatures, prosthetics and visual concepts alongside the story itself.
That philosophy is central to Metamorphose, a science-fiction body-horror story built around themes of biological invasion, mutation and loss of control.
After being violently attacked by a creature in the forest, a man begins undergoing a terrifying physical and psychological transformation as an invasive alien organism spreads through his body. As the mutation accelerates, the community of Silver Creek faces an escalating threat that could spread far beyond its borders.
The MovieMaker interview explores the real-world biological influences behind the project, including entomology, medical forensics and virology, as well as Harvey’s fascination with trypophobia—the fear or aversion associated with clusters of small holes and repeating organic patterns.
Harvey explains that even when working within science fiction and horror, grounding the effects in recognizable anatomy and biological processes is essential to making the imagery believable.
The article also takes readers inside the development of the film’s alien creatures. Designs began as sketches before evolving into digital 3D models, sculptures and practical silicone puppets, combining traditional creature fabrication with modern digital workflows.
Harvey cites filmmakers including David Cronenberg and Guillermo del Toro among his creative influences, reflecting a filmmaking philosophy centred around ambitious genre concepts, memorable creatures and tactile effects created physically on set.
For Transfigure Films, Metamorphose represents the type of genre filmmaking at the centre of its developing slate: visually driven horror and science fiction that combines practical effects, creature design and contemporary filmmaking techniques.
